STL gains UKAS accreditation for Sour Service Tests
Sour oilfield environments, containing hydrogen sulphide, are very corrosive and can lead to material failures by mechanisms such as sulphide stress cracking and hydrogen induced cracking. STL has recently extended its range of UKAS accredited tests to include two NACE industry standard sour service tests.

The two tests covered by the UKAS accreditation are:
NACE TM0177-96 method A, for sulphide stress cracking; for these "smooth tensile tests" we employ Cortest proof rings and have capacity for more than 40 simultaneous tests.

NACE TM0284-03 for hydrogen induced cracking of pipeline and pressure vessel steel.

The external recognition of these sour service tests provide customers with greater confidence in the results, particularly when third party inspection and auditing is required. The tests are conducted within the Corrosion Department of STL's Material Testing Division, which specialises in all aspects of corrosion testing, with particular expertise in NACE, EFC and ASTM test specifications. The extensive test facilities include modern conventional corrosion and metallurgy laboratories, high temperature and pressure autoclave equipment as well as a dedicated hydrogen sulphide laboratory.
