Insurance Loss Investigation
STL's Corrosion division works with insurance companies and independent assessors in investigating claims and losses of various industrial plant and equipment. This service is offered worldwide and covers a range of corrosion and related failures and degradation mechanisms.
Examples of typical investigations include:
- rapid corrosion and other failures of plant within warranty period. These can occur due to inappropriate materials selection, poor quality lubrication, misuse in operation and unanticipated service conditions.
- corrosion and other damage to equipment due to contact with water from flooding, fire fighting etc. Some metallic materials begin to corrode quickly when wet; bearing surfaces for example are particularly sensitive to 'flash rusting', as is much measuring equipment. Electronic equipment is sensitive to water damage, but can often be cleaned successfully by specialist contractors. We work with these contractors to specify cleaning procedures, to supervise the process and to independently verify the level of cleaning achieved.
- fire and smoke damage are a frequent occurrence. We can advise on the temperatures reached in a fire (by consideration of the thermal properties of the materials involved), and whether salvage is feasible. Specialist cleaning contractors can remove smoke contamination from sensitive materials such as computers and other electronic equipment. Our staff provide an independent assessment of cleaning procedures and level of cleaning achieved.
We also work with claimants to substantiate claims for damaged equipment.
