Jet Impingement Testing
Jet impingement testing is a standard method of testing Cu-base alloys such as brasses, bronzes and cupro-nickels. These alloys rely on a protective film for their corrosion resistance and the limitation on their use is frequently a velocity limit above which this film is damaged. The test involves a jet of solution striking the surface of an immersed sample at right angles at a known velocity. The jet restricts the formation of protective films on these alloys and the extent of corrosion is a measure of this restriction.
Our facilities include a purpose built jet impingement testing rig which can operate up to 20 m/s and from 5°C to 55°C. This rig can test 24 samples in parallel as two sets of 12. Each set of 12 can be tested at different velocities, which has a major benefit in reducing the overall timescale of large testing programs. Interpretation of results gives information on the velocity limit in any given environment.
